Russian Cattle and Poultry Production Increased by 25.8% in 6 Years

The livestock industry has kept the positive momentum of meat production, while most of the growth is due to the high results of pig and poultry breeding. According to the public affairs office of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, last year Russian manufacturers have produced 14.6 mln tonnes of livestock and poultry, which is by 25.8% more than in 2012.

The production of live weight poultry for slaughter reached 6.6 mln tonnes in 2017 (+6.9% versus 2016 or +36.0% versus 2012), pigs – 4.6 mln tonnes (+5.0% versus 2016 or +39.0% versus 2012), cattle – 2.8 mln tonnes (-3% versus 2012), sheep and goats – 470,000 tonnes (+2.0% versus 2016 or +11.2% versus 2012).

Beginning from 2014, the negative trend in milk production has been reversed. In 2017, the milk production was 31.1 mln tonnes (+1.2% versus 2016), including the agricultural organizations – 15.6 mln tonnes (+3.8%), and farmers – 2.4 mln tonnes (+7.5%). The total milk production, compared to 2012, decreased by 2%, while the production by agricultural organizations rose by 6%. According to the Russian Ministry of Agriculture’s forecasts, the annual growth of milk production will reach at least 500,000 tonnes.

Compared to 2012, the dairy cow production growth in enterprises from all categories reached 111.6% (up to 4350 kg), including agricultural organizations – 126.1% (up to 5700 kg), private companies – 101.8% (up to 3550 kg) and private farms – 106.8% (up to 3600 kg).

The performance potential of livestock industry’s subsectors largely depends on the condition of livestock breeding. Currently, the National Breeding Register includes 2.5 ths. registered herds of breeding livestock animals.

The needs of agricultural producers in high quality young breeder are met by the domestic reproduction and import. The realization of young cattle breeder with milk productiveness was 81.1 ths. head of livestock in 2017 (+3.9% versus 2013), with meat productiveness – 33.6 ths. head of livestock (+32.3%), pigs – 94.5 ths. head of livestock (+24.7%), sheep and goats – 182.1 ths. head of livestock (+22.2%).
